'대중적으로 유명하고 널리 사용되면서 안전하다고 알려진 인삼(홍삼)이 부작용이 꽤 있다.
부작용이 생기는 원인은 장기복용, 과량복용, 다른 약물과의 상호작용, 체질(?) 등이다.
오심, 구토, 복통, 두통, 불면, 집중력 저하, 신경과민, 부종, 소화불량 등등의 부작용과 코피, 유방통증, 질출혈(하혈) 등도 부작용으로 나타나는 증상들이다.'

One of the most popular herbs, ginseng, may cause side effects in some people. Let us take a look at the possible ginseng side effects.
Side Effects of Ginseng
Normally, it is considered to be a safe herb, if used in correct doses. But, adulterated products can be ineffective and sometimes, may cause adverse effects too. Ginseng side effects may also be due to prolonged usage, high doses, interaction with other drugs and reactions in people with some medical conditions. The most common side effects are nervousness, palpitations, nausea, vomiting, bloating, abdominal pain, loss of concentration, insomnia, heaviness in the chest, skin rashes, edema and digestive disorders. It may cause low blood sugar levels in some people, whereas some others may experience hypertension. It has also been reported that asthma attacks are caused in some people, who use ginseng.
While Asian and American ginseng can cause side effects like insomnia, restlessness, headaches, vomiting, diarrhea, bleeding from the nose, breast pain and vaginal bleeding, Siberian ginseng is also said to cause somewhat similar adverse effects like nervousness, insomnia and diarrhea. The latter may also cause chest pain, breathing problems and skin rash. Siberian variety is also associated with some rare side effects like rapid heartbeats, muscle spasms and high blood pressure. The following are some of the causes for these side effects.
Over Dosage
It is believed that ginseng dosage is very much important as far its efficiency is concerned. Only correct dosages are effective in treating any condition, but overdose is said to be one of the main causes behind ginseng side effects. The most common ones like, nervousness and insomnia, are believed to be the result of high doses of the herb. Even though, these symptoms are not life-threatening and are usually ignored, in the long run, it can prove detrimental to the health of the user.
Allergies and Medical Conditions
While some people can be allergic to ginseng and this condition can trigger allergic reactions in them. It is considered that severe asthma attacks in some of the users, could be due to this problem. Shooting up of the blood pressure may also be treated as an allergic response to ginseng. People, who are already on medication to treat diseases like, diabetes and high or low blood pressure should not take this herb. Ginseng can cause a low estrogen level in pregnant and lactating mothers. As this herb can trigger bleeding, it is always safe to avoid it, before and after surgeries. It is also recommended that people with mental problems should not use ginseng, which can further complicate their condition.
Interference with Other Drugs
Some of the side effects of ginseng are caused due to the interaction of this herb with the prescribed medicines. This herb may interfere with drugs, which are administered to treat some medical conditions like, diabetes and low or high blood pressure. It can also affect the action of some blood-thinning drugs, which are administered to people with blood clots, or to prevent the occurrence of blood clots. Such people should avoid the consumption of ginseng. It can cause dangerous side effects, if taken along with depression medication or antidepressants, anticoagulants and anti-inflammatory drugs.
In short, ginseng can cause side effects, if consumed along with some other drugs, or by people affected with some medical conditions, or if taken in high doses or consumed for a very long period. This herb should not be given to children. Even though, considered as the safest herb, seek the advice of your doctor, before starting ginseng. Always try to get an unadulterated product and adhere to the prescribed doses. You have to stop the usage, if you experience any of the symptoms or if the prescribed period is over. In some cases, the side effects may subside within a few days of use, but it is advisable to consult your physician, once you experience the symptoms. If it is severe, seek medical attention immediately.
